South Africa in 2011The message for 2011 is about balance between what has gone before and what is yet to come; we will need to strive for equilibrium between what is tried and tested and which has stood the test of time, and that which is new and innovative and which may be more beneficial or effective. The adage of not throwing the baby out with the bath water will hold true for 2011, with the baby being either the old, with its firm, solid and secure parameters or the new which possibly still has to define its boundaries.

General 2011 Forecast

The art of prediction is the ability to predict future events with the greatest accuracy and specificity possible. This is only truly feasible when working with a specific nativity, be that of a person or a country. In order for current planetary configurations to affect a person or a country on a personal level, they must connect to the planets in the birth chart; however, we can gauge the flavour of a time period simply by assessing certain factors in a broader context.

In mundane astrology it is really only the outer planets that are assessed due to the slow speed at which they travel; any changes or planetary phenomena that then occur are of significance. In 2011 Jupiter, who takes 12 years to complete one cycle, will change sign twice, and he will conjunct Uranus and oppose Saturn, the slowest planet of the 7; these 2 planets have been in opposition for well over a year already. Jupiter represents wealth, expansion, opportunities and the promise of things to come; he also rules the clergy and mercy. We see him leaving his sign of Pisces where he is strong, and thus diminishing in power when that occurs.

It is possible that the global markets and currencies will be affected adversely and that 2011 heralds another leaner period in financial matters - the dreaded 'double-dip' scenario feared by economists; at the very least we will see changes occurring due to new structures which are initiated. Jupiter's opposition to Saturn in March denotes a conflict between expansion and consolidation, and on many levels we may experience the new regime fighting the old. Saturn rules tradition and beliefs that are intrinsic to our survival as a species, thus a conflict with Jupiter where boundaries are breached, must have consequences.

We will experience 6 eclipses in 2011, 4 solar and 2 lunar, and these are also of significance as they are viewed as planetary phenomena. These are addressed monthly when they occur in this article, and they may bring change and indecision; this is not necessarily a negative factor as often indecision is better than acting in haste.

Saturn is exalted in Libra throughout 2011 and we will experience the return to structures, boundaries and authority that were initiated in 2010. While on many levels these are necessary and must be viewed in a positive light, we can also expect to see dictatorships of many kinds, in all areas of life, and in diverse countries.

The message for 2011 is about balance between what has gone before and what is yet to come; we will need to strive for equilibrium between what is tried and tested and which has stood the test of time, and that which is new and innovative and which may be more beneficial or effective. The adage of not throwing the baby out with the bath water will hold true for 2011, with the baby being either the old, with its firm, solid and secure parameters or the new which possibly still has to define its boundaries.

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in January 2011

  • The month commences with a solar eclipse on the 4th at 13 degrees Capricorn, before the Sun moves out of Capricorn and into Aquarius where he will be in detriment. The Sun is the Lord of Life and on a personal level is symbolic of the essence of who we are, or the life blood of a country.
  • The eclipse in Capricorn will herald quick or sudden movement in earth related matters, so a shift is to be expected. Literally, the ground could move from under our feet, depending on which sensitive points are touched by this eclipse in individual or mundane nativities. Whether that is positive or negative depends entirely on what needs shaking up and how long the previous status quo has been in existence.
  • We have a Jupiter ingress from Pisces into Aries, so matters ruled by Jupiter will lose dignity. The financial markets could dip and on a personal level we know that January is not a good financial month after the December period.
  • Jupiter will conjunct two malefic fixed stars this month, Scheat and Difda, again highlighting misfortune to his areas of rulership. Jupiter is also the natural ruler of rain and with his loss of dignity by sign as well as the influence of the two fixed stars, we could experience erratic weather patterns related to water.
  • Saturn, the planet of boundaries and discipline, turns retrograde on the 27th; denoting a break down or reversal in structure and order, and even legal matters could be affected in this manner. If you are in the process of litigation, be prepared for delays.
  • January heralds a busy planetary start to the year, as always, but it does bring with it a tone of caution. It is not a month to initiate projects that will require stability and expansion, and overall, it is a month to consolidate and recover from the excess of the 2010 year-end festivities, take stock of the year ahead, set goals and align aspirations with reality, especially those of your financial portfolios.
  • Change is a positive factor and sometimes unpleasant events are required in order for it to manifest; it is therefore our view which makes things more unpleasant than they sometimes are – if we view January as a month of sweeping out the cob webs to make room for new things that wish enter our lives, then January is a positive month indeed.
  • It is forgotten in the southern hemisphere that we are in the winter solstice period, and winter is a time for preparing the land for spring, an apt description for January!

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in February 2011

  • Mars, the lesser malefic, will be combust until the Sun enters Pisces on the 19th – Mars is the ruler of South Africa's 5th and 12th houses which are associated with creative pursuits, pleasure/sport, secret enemies and self-undoing.
  • Caution should be applied to matters ruled by Mars for most of February – he conjuncts Neptune on the 21st (mass destruction) and enters Pisces on the 23rd where he will again be combust.
  • Mars is the natural ruler of the metal iron, combat, soldiers and their leaders, surgeons and surgery, and matter which is hot and dry such as fire.
  • It is certainly not a good month to undergo major elective surgery.
  • The Sun and Moon are difficult to define as their primary rulerships over terrestrial matters, including man, are abstract. The Sun rules the essence or life force and the ego; the Moon the emotional nature.
  • The Sun in South Africa's chart is Lord 9 – house of teachers, universities and foreign countries.
  • On a more practical level the Sun rules the metal gold, primarily the heart and the brain of man and all food, specifically those that are yellow, orange or gold in colour and shaped like the Sun, such as citrus and sunflowers.
  • The Sun in Aquarius conjuncts Neptune on the 17th and Neptune always brings with it mass destruction on some level; matters ruled by the Sun may be adversely affected when this conjunction occurs.
  • Saturn retrograde is still applicable, denoting a reversal in his areas of rulership: boundaries, discipline, long-term projects and legal matters.
  • Mercury is afflicted in South Africa's chart this month – again bringing governmental issues into the foreground, repeating movement depicted in January.

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in March 2011

  • Most of the planetary movement remains the same as for February, except that Mars will leave combustion as the Sun separates from this aspect on the 9th.
  • Mars is in triplicity in Pisces so is essentially strong; therefore his rulerships are strengthened once this combustion is exited. A reversal of his rulerships is depicted in February.
  • Mercury, the planet of articulation and communication, conjuncts Uranus on the 9th.
  • We can expect to see sudden change or separation on some level in the area of communication, as well as changes in Mercury's natural rulerships – the IT world, the media, transport and currency.
  • In South Africa's chart Mercury is the government, so the thread shown to date regarding change or reform on some level, continues.
  • Mercury delights in windy, stormy and violent weather as well as in earthquakes in hot countries. Weather patterns pertaining to this could be affected while Mercury is in conjunction with Uranus.
  • Mercury turns retrograde on the 31st, so ensure that all data is backed up and contracts are signed by then.
  • Useful information on Planetary Rulerships for days of the week:
    • Monday: Moon – good day to give birth and to nurture
    • Tuesday: Mars – good day for action and decision making
    • Wednesday: Mercury – good day for all types of communication
    • Thursday: Jupiter – good day to ask for an increase or a loan
    • Friday: Venus – good day for romance and pleasure
    • Saturday: Saturn – good day to lay the foundations of anything
    • Sunday: Sun – good day to socialise with family and friends

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in April 2011

  • Mercury turns direct on the 24th, so if you were affected by this planet behaving against his nature, this should cease.
  • In South Africa's chart, Mercury and Saturn are in opposition, the assets in conflict with the government possibly pertain to investments.
  • Venus, the female principle, enters Aries on the 22nd where she will be in detriment.
  • Venus in detriment has the ability to behave extremely badly, especially regarding the man-made and carnal pleasures of this world. Caution should be applied when indulging in pleasurable past-times and spending should be curtailed.
  • Venus is also South Africa's cabinet and its rural areas/farmlands - a watchful eye should be cast in these directions.
  • Mars, the male principle, enters his own sign of Aries on the 3rd. Matters pertaining to Mars such as decision-making, confrontation and combat will be heightened.
  • Mars conjuncts Uranus on the 3rd – expect sudden changes in warfare, the sporting arena and daily interaction.
  • The Sun opposes Saturn on the 3rd. Saturn is still retrograde but in exaltation.
  • Saturnine aspects will suffer from this opposition, be on the lookout for changes in the mining sector and related principles.
  • The Sun in turn will be hindered by the restrictive Saturn, so conditions are not conducive to performing live in public or being on centre stage.
  • Jupiter will be combust until the 21st when the Sun exits Aries and ingresses into Taurus, placing Jupiter's rulerships at risk.
  • Jupiter rules judges, lawyers, ecclesiastical men, senators and the metal tin. He is also the main significator for South Africa.
  • In return, this is a benefit for the Sun as he closely aspects the great benefic, who is not essentially strong but is still beneficent.
  • Saturn and Mars will be in opposition on the 18th. Matters Saturnian could experience sudden activity of a heated nature, and matters of a Mars nature could be slowed down by the ponderous Saturn.
  • To affect us on a personal level we know that this aspect would have to connect with our birth charts in some way, but in general we may see things like mining (Saturn) accidents (Mars), activity (Mars) related to mining shares (Saturn) and even movement (Mars) in the property/farming sectors (Saturn) or changes (Mars) to those in positions of authority (Saturn).

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in for May 2011

  • Venus opposes Saturn on the 1st. Although Saturn is in exaltation in Libra at this time and is ruled by Venus, he is still the great malefic. Venusian matters could experience restriction and consolidation on some levels.  A good time to tighten your financial belt with regards to spending.
  • Mars conjuncts Jupiter on the 1st. Jupiter is currently in Aries, the sign of Mars, so this will add to expansion of Mars' rulerships such as combat, decisive action and frenetic activity. It does not bode well for Jupiterian matters as Mars is the lesser malefic.
  • Jupiter is South Africa's main significator so sudden changes in the country could manifest as well as heated debates and friction with international communities.
  • Mars leaves his sign of Aries where he is in dignity and enters into his detriment in Taurus on the 11th.
  • Mars is South Africa's hidden enemies and with the conjunction of Mars as secret enemies to Jupiter, South Africa's main significator, there could possibly be erratic and sudden movement as the two come into close contact – secret enemies affecting South Africa in a very personal way, possibly indicating betrayal of some kind.
  • Venus conjuncts Jupiter on the 11th. The greater and lesser benefics becoming one. Be on the lookout for illness at this time, especially sudden outbreaks of strains of viruses, as we head towards the middle of winter.
  • Venus leaves her fall in Aries on the 15th and enters dignity in her sign of Taurus. Venus is South Africa's 11th house, the house of the advisors to the president. Possibly the changes that were indicated in the previous months will now manifest.
  • Mars and Venus conjunct on the 23rd. They rule the more basal natures of the feminine and masculine.  A time for discussion on women's rights, sexual abuse and rape – well worth the investment of hours if positive solutions can be reached for South Africa.

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in June 2011

  • Solar Eclipse on the 1st at 23:17 CAT at 11 Gemini. This eclipse is conjunct the Sun in South Africa's birth chart, further highlighting the area of our assets and currency as it is linked to the money/assets of our international partners. If matters are going to manifest in this area they should do so around this time.
  • Mercury gains dignity when entering Gemini on the 2nd. He will conjunct the Sun on the 12th and the usual rule of combustion does not apply in a negative way as Mercury rules the Sun while in Gemini.
  • An opportune time for all matters Mercurial – the IT industry, communication and media-related industries. The perfect time for the best return in those areas is between 10pm on the 12th and 6am on the 13th.
  • Venus leaves her dignity in Taurus and enters Gemini on the 9th. This brings her into contact with South Africa's Sun in the birth chart. As Venus rules the 6th house of illness, and posited in Gemini, winter viruses could rear their ugly heads again.
  • Make sure you are following a healthy and nutritious eating plan and getting enough rest.
  • Saturn is Stationery Direct on the 13th. Not a good period for major tasks related to the earth which require speed and accuracy. He will turn direct on the 16th, leaving this retrograde phase behind.
  • Total Lunar Eclipse on the 15th at 22:12 CAT at 24 Sagittarius. This does not impact on South Africa's chart but if it does impact on your chart, expect matters in whatever area of life it is aspecting to come to light.
  • Mercury squares Saturn on the 21st, indicating restriction to areas of currency and communication.
  • The summer solstice is on the 21st, denoting midsummer in the northern hemisphere and midwinter in the southern hemisphere.

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in July 2011

  • Solar Eclipse on the 1st at 10:39 CAT at 9 Cancer. This eclipse is posited across the 2nd/8th axis in South Africa's chart and in close conjunction to the Part of Fortune. This serves to further highlight the theme of change and movement regarding South Africa's currency/assets in relation to its international investors.
  • The Sun squares Saturn on the 3rd indicating restriction to Sun matters by Saturn. The Sun is the natural ruler of all food and there may be crop failure or food shortages in some areas.
  • In the chart of South Africa the Sun will conjunct its own antiscion. This normally denotes the end of a cycle of something. In South Africa this could pertain to universities, the law, places of worship and even foreign relations.
  • Venus squares Saturn on the 13th. Venusian matters such as romance, arts and culture and pleasurable pursuits are curtailed – a month to focus on hard work instead.
  • The Sun enters Leo on the 23rd, the only sign he rules and where he is in dignity. The Lord of Light is benefic and fortuitous in Leo.
  • Mercury enters Virgo on the 28th. In Virgo, one of the two signs that Mercury rules, Mercury is more able to focus on detail and assimilation of information, and is prone to analysis. An ideal time to pursue Mercurial pursuits of that nature and to study for exams.

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in August 2011

  • The Sun squares Jupiter on the 1st. This placement could be beneficial for the metal gold and for money matters in general. Jupiter, the natural benefic, although not strong in Taurus is the natural significator of wealth and of South Africa. The Sun rules gold, so although any change will be a struggle due to the square aspect, it should be beneficial as the Sun is in dignity.
  • Mercury is Stationary Retrograde on the 3rd, hereafter he turns retrograde, so as always, ensure that computer data is backed up, that documents are signed and that any loose ends relating to paper work are neatly tied up before this retrograde phase.
  • Mercury will also enter combustion around this time when he retrogrades back into Leo – this adds to the problems one can encounter with him being retrograde, with the Sun being particularly strong, so extra hot and dry.
  • Avoid long trips around this time – you may find flights are delayed and you might experience more hiccups than usual around travel activities.
  • Venus conjuncts the Sun on the 16th. Venus ingresses into Virgo on the 21st. The combination of Venus moving into fall in Virgo and into combustion means that Venusian matters are debilitated; apply caution when participating in leisure/pleasurable pursuits and watch over spending on luxury items.
  • Mercury is Stationary Direct on the 26th. He will now turn direct, so any problems you experience relating to his retrograde status will lessen.
  • Jupiter is Stationary Retrograde on the 30th. Jupiter will turn retrograde soon; he will then square Jupiter in South Africa's chart. Difficult personal decisions are to be made within the country and this is also a time of national policy reflection.

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in September 2011

  • Mercury ingresses into Virgo on the 9th and Venus ingresses into Libra on the 15th.
  • Because the orbits of Mercury and Venus lie within Earth's orbit, Mercury can never be more than 28 zodiacal degrees from the Sun (either in the same sign as the Sun or one sign before or after it); Venus can never be more than 48 degrees from the Sun (in the same sign, or up to two signs before or after it).
  • Both Mercury and Venus move into signs they rule, therefore into dignity. So matters under their jurisdiction have greater potential.
  • The lunar return chart for South Africa for September depicts Mars conjunct the Ascendant.
  • This could highlight swift movement to and within the country this month.
  • If related to weather, this could be erratic: flash floods for example, or there could be swift and violent action on many other levels.
  • These possibilities are not necessarily negative. For example, if decisions were pending with regards to outcomes for the greater good of the country, this may be the month in which these decisions are made, after months of procrastination.

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in October 2011

  • Mars squares Jupiter on the 3rd. Jupiter is South Africa's main significator so this picks up the theme from September where Mars was conjunct the Ascendant, bringing swift decisions or decisive activity to the country – Jupiter and the Ascendant both depict South Africa as a whole.
  • Mercury conjuncts Saturn on the 6th, indicating restriction to Mercurial matters, not prodigious to expanding in communication arenas.
  • The Sun conjuncts Saturn on the 13th. The Sun as the natural ruler of all foods conjunct the great malefic may bring food shortages or loss of certain crops; even a change in the gold price.
  • Venus and Mercury oppose Jupiter on the 14th and 17th respectively. Jupiter as South Africa may experience positive exposure in the international press.
  • Venus and Mercury square Mars on the 26th and 28th respectively.  Currency and certain Venusian commodities may now be impaired after enjoying the Jupiterian benefits a few days previously.
  • The Sun opposes Jupiter on the 29th. This is beneficial for the Sun and negative for Jupiter. The gold price may now increase again but Jupiter as the natural significator of wealth and opportunity suffers. Not a lucrative time for speculation in general.
  • Venus in South Africa's lunar return chart opposes Venus in the birth chart. Matters pertaining to rural areas may arise which are positive in the end.

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in November 2011

  • Solar Eclipse on the 25th at 8:21 CAT at 2 Sagittarius; conjunct antiscion of Saturn, ruler of second and third houses in the natal chart.
  • Venus and Mercury enter Sagittarius on the 2nd; an improvement for Venus and deterioration for Mercury. This month is more suited to creative and pleasurable pursuits than ones requiring attention to detail cerebrally.
  • Mars enters Virgo on the 11th. Battles this month will be fought verbally as opposed to physically as Mars enters the sign of Mercury. Be cautious of those who by nature have a scathing tongue.
  • Mercury is Stationary Retrograde on the 24th – ensure that all computer data is backed up and saved before this time.
  • The lunar return chart for this month for South Africa sees the Sun in opposition to the Ascendant.
  • Conflict with international powers appears inevitable as the Sun is the ruler of the 9th house of foreign countries in South Africa's birth chart.
  • If conflict is not the outcome, and an international partnership is formed instead, this could be tinged with an element of regret due to the aspect connecting the two being an opposition.

Astrological Forecast for South Africa in December 2011

  • Total Lunar Eclipse on the 10th at 16:33 CAT at 18 Gemini. This eclipse is posited across the Ascendant/Descendant axis of South Africa's birth chart, highlighting inevitable or fated matters relating to the country and its partners/investors.
  • Mercury conjuncts the Sun on the 4th. This is not fortuitous for matters ruled by Mercury, barring the area of 17 minutes on either side of exact conjunction (called cazimi), as Mercury is combust.
  • Mercury depicts the partners to South Africa in the birth chart and in general rules the IT industry, the media and areas of travel and communication.
  • Mercury is Stationary Direct on the 14th. If you are travelling in December, try and do so after this date as it will facilitate your plans more easily.
  • Jupiter is Stationary Direct on the 25th. Just in time for the festive season, the great benefic who rules opportunity and abundance, turns direct, which is positive indeed.
  • Winter solstice on the 21st denotes midsummer in the southern hemisphere and midwinter in the northern hemisphere.
