Food for Thought

A normal healthy person takes 18 breaths per minute; 1080 breaths per hour; 25920 breaths per day. The vernal point takes 25920 years to go around the zodiac. One day’s breaths reflect the number of solar years in a cosmic year.

Here we encounter another major difference between traditional and modern astrology. Signs do not do anything, they simply describe the planets that are posited in them. They are adjectives while the planets are nouns and the aspects are verbs. These 12 adjectives each have a set of characteristics, but they do not have the fully fledged and inflated personalities allotted to them in modern astrology. They will be masculine or feminine, barren or fertile, mute or voiced and humane or bestial and some are even maimed. Each sign is categorised by an element and by a mode or quality, which further adds to its characteristics.

Cardinal Mode: Outgoing

  • Fire: Aries. Masculine, hot and dry, bestial, half voiced.
  • Earth: Capricorn. Feminine, cold and dry, bestial, weak voiced.
  • Air: Libra. Masculine, hot and moist, humane, loud voiced.
  • Water: Cancer. Feminine, cold and moist, fertile, mute.

Fixed Mode: Consolidating

  • Fire: Leo. Masculine, hot and dry, bestial, barren, half voiced.
  • Earth: Taurus. Feminine, cold and dry, bestial, half voiced.
  • Air: Aquarius. Masculine, hot and moist, humane, weak voiced.
  • Water: Scorpio. Feminine, cold and moist, fertile, mute.

Mutable Mode: Returning

  • Fire: Sagittarius. Masculine, hot and dry, bestial, half voiced.
  • Earth: Virgo. Feminine, cold and dry, humane, barren, loud voiced.
  • Air: Gemini. Masculine, hot and moist, humane, barren, loud voiced.
  • Water: Pisces. Feminine, cold and moist, fertile, mute.
